Understanding Your Skin Type

Although everyone's skin produces sebum (oil) through sebaceous glands, your skin is a bit more active than most. Depending on your skin, you may find the need to cleanse multiple times a day in order to prevent oily buildup on your skin. This can cause more problems if skin is overstressed, resulting in premature aging. Since your skin has shown few signs of aging thus far, you have likely avoided the pitfall of excessive cleansing. Fortunately, as you age, the problem of oily skin is likely to decrease on its own.

Your skin is what most people wish they had: generally neutral and overall on the easy side in terms of skin maintenance. You experience neither too much nor too little oiliness, an indication that hormones do not play a strong role in affecting your skin health. Because oiliness or dryness is not an overall issue, you have more options when it comes to focusing on other problems areas your skin may encounter. Given that your skin has so far shown few signs of aging, applying preventative measures in your skincare routine (like daily SPF) is a great idea.

Having dry skin can be a frustrating problem. Obvious-seeming solutions like adding more moisture to skin don't necessarily work. This is because when outer layers of skin become damaged, skin has a hard time maintaining moisture levels. A key step in reducing damage to your skin's external layer is being more careful around sun exposure, and avoiding products with drying or irritating ingredients. Examples of these might be products containing alcohol, or ones that are very abrasive. This is not to say you should avoid exfoliation: this is still n important part of regenerating your skin's outer layer. Since your skin does not show many signs of aging, the combination of external factors likely has been benign to your skin. Continual prevention and protection is the best course of action for your skin.

Generally, areas around the forehead, chin, or nose can have higher levels of sebaceous glands that other parts of the face. If this is the case, you may need to apply your products more selectively, and undergo a longer learning curve in terms of which products are applied best to which areas of your face, and how often. The one thing to keep in mind is there is unlikely to be one set of product application guidelines that fit your specific skin type, and so you may have to experiment with different modalities. Because you skin has shown few signs of aging thus far, continuing with a preventative program above all else is a great idea for your skin.

More about your skin concerns

Acne or Pimples expand_moreexpand_less

Acne is a very common problem, which is caused when follicles become clogged with dead skin cells, leading to inflammation and resulting bacteria growth. Hormones, medications, lifestyle, heredity and environmental factors can all contribute to acne. And these can vary depending on ones age (for example, perimenopause is a period with heightened potential for acne due o the body's hormonal changes). Keeping skin clean is crucial when fighting acne, but doing so without stressing skin in the process. Prescription topical antibiotics are also an option, for really strong outbreaks.

Enlarged Pores expand_moreexpand_less

Although changing the size of pores is not possible, it is possible to minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, if this is something that you suffer from. Using products that contain Glycolic Acid (exfoliation and re-growth) as well as moisturizing and cleansing your skin religiously are two ways to combat your visible pore size.

Brown Spots expand_moreexpand_less

Brown spots are caused by a melanin imbalance. Excess production of this skin pigment are typically caused by excessive exposure to sun, but can be caused by hormones. In order to treat brown spots, it is best to prevent them in the first place, by using an SPF. Some brown spots or discolorations are deeper rooted than others, and so it really depends on your skin in determining the best treatment. Some spots are more tough to get rid of than others. Products with formulated with effective compounds of Vitamin C, s well as Niacinamide, are effective in dealing with this condition.

Wrinkles expand_moreexpand_less

Wrinkle are caused by a combination of factors including sun damage, genetic factors, and hormonal factors. Anti-wrinkle products can have a strong impact on wrinkles, if used consistently. Products with antioxidants are especially effective, as are products with skin repairing and rejuvenating ingredients, to help maintain the skin's barrier in order to promote healing. Other ingredients that promote re-growth or skin regeneration, such as retinols, are key as well. Most important is sunscreen, using an SPF on a daily basis for effective prevention.

Sagging Areas expand_moreexpand_less

When skin loses collagen and elastin, the result can be a sagging appearance. Helping the skin to build more collagen is an important way to fight this effect. Wearing sunscreen is also important, in order to prevent the breakdown of skin's firmness in the first place. Some topical applications can help the skin build more collagen.

Redness expand_moreexpand_less

Redness can be a result of different conditions, such as rosacea or psoriasis, or various different allergies. It is important to understand first and foremost if you are doing anything that could contribute to irritating your skin's exterior layer. Stay away from any products with known irritants, like alcohol or strong abrasives like chemical peels.

Undereye Dark Circles expand_moreexpand_less

The skin around the eyes in known to be more delicate than round other areas of the face. Dark circles under the eyes are believed to be caused cause by blood congestion in that area. Products containing retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin K can be especially effective in dealing with dark circles.

Allergies expand_moreexpand_less

Skin allergies can be a result of many different things, including environmental factors that are very hard to correct without the aid of a doctor. We recommend that if you have persistent allergic reactions, you consider consulting a dermatologist of physician in order to get more insight into what might be upsetting your skin.

Rosacea expand_moreexpand_less

Rosacea is characterized by inflammation of the skin, with areas of pink or red color. It is an inflammatory condition, becoming more persistent over time. For some, it can be accompanied by bumpy skin or acne/blackhead breakouts. It can also become quite sensitive. There are many differing views on what causes rosacea, with no definite cause known. For people with rosacea, using an SPF is very important to protect skin, as is including calming products in your routine to help decrease redness. Most important is knowing and understanding which ingredients can cause irritation to your skin, and avoiding these. Any harsh products should not be used.
